Amazon.com Files Shelf Registration Statement

SEATTLE, May 18, 1999--/PRNewswire/--Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) today announced that it is has filed a universal shelf registration statement on Form S-3 with the Securities and Exchange Commission which will permit the company, from time to time, to offer and sell various types of securities, up to a total value of $2 billion. The company filed the registration statement to gain additional flexibility in accessing the capital markets.

Any offer of securities pursuant to the registration statement will be made only by means of a prospectus. Securities may not be sold nor may offers to buy be accepted prior to the time the registration statement becomes effective.
